Rick's having surgery, AGAIN. Ugh!!

A quick note to let everyone know what is going on with me, Rick, over Christmas. I will be getting my 3rd arthroscopic surgery on my right knee, on Dec 17th to clean it out and remove debris which is causing it to lock up and preventing me from straightening it past an angle of 55°. This is a very critical surgery as it will determine the course of treatment for my knee 8 weeks later. Some time in February we will begin Phase II of the treatment of my knee. Depending on what the surgeon find either one of two things will happen.

1st option is: Since I do not have a anterior (outside) meniscus remaining and it is bone on bone, the surgeon will either break my tibia or femur and reset it to change the axis of my knee and how it handles weight bearing to put the stress on the inside of my knee where there is supportive tissue. Then at 50ish, total knee replacement

2nd option is: Partial knee replacement. Then at 50ish total knee replacement

The surgeon while in there will decide on the best course of treatment.

The impact on my career is this, if I complete physical therapy and regain total range of motion within 6 months, there should be not be any issues. If I do not regain total range of motion then the CG has the option to begin the process to medically retire me.

I have discussed it with my physical therapist and based on my commitment with regaining motion in my shoulder, he feel this is an obtainable goal.

My running days are over, psychologically this is a hard pill to swallow. I have never been one to be still and idle and I will have to augment my lifestyle as a husband, parent and a Coastie to accommodate my limitations. My goal it to WALK a 5k 6-8 months after surgery.

April is being extremely supportive and I love her dearly. She is putting up with my worn out body and not missing one step even with Aldyn. I thank her for everything she does for me.

I ask you not only keep me in prayer but also April and the kids.

Thanks and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
